Start with the area you want to screen

A fence along the street serves a different purpose from a screen beside your outdoor dining table. First identify where you need shelter: beside the terrace, along the entire boundary or just around a seating area. Consider the view from both the house and the garden. This avoids solving a privacy issue at the expense of a lovely view of greenery.

In a small city garden, the balance between height and space matters most. In a deep garden, the rhythm of the posts has a stronger influence on the overall appearance. Our buying guide to low-maintenance fencing helps you make these decisions in the right order.

Modern or country style: consider lines and texture

For a home with clean-lined window frames, flat weaving can emphasise the horizontal lines. Single weaving highlights the branch texture and also suits gardens with informal planting. Double weaving looks fuller and is useful where screening views is the main priority.

Consider the weaving alongside the colour of the posts and paving. A dark post can echo black window frames, while a wood tone can soften the transition to planting. Our comparison of weaving patterns explains what these choices mean for light and visibility.

Panels create rhythm; continuous weaving creates calm

With panels, the posts form visible dividing points. This can work well in a garden with clearly defined areas or a straight path. With continuous weaving, the fence is built on site and presents an uninterrupted front face.

Consider the other side too: the front and back of continuous weaving differ. Agree in advance which side will face your garden, particularly along a shared boundary. Explore the options in our woven garden fencing range.

Around a terrace or pool, the viewing angle guides your choice

Sit where the table or sun lounger will be. Where do overlooking views come from: the street, a neighbouring garden or an upstairs window? A dense screen in the wrong place will not automatically solve the problem. Position, height and weaving need to work together.

A fence provides visual screening, but is not automatically a certified pool safety barrier. Plan pool access and safety requirements separately. A pergola can complement the design by providing shade on the terrace.

Make the entrance part of the design

Plan the opening before deciding where the panels will start. How wide must the gate be for a bike, lawnmower or wheelbarrow? Which way does it open, and will it obstruct planting or the garden path? A gate in the same weaving pattern creates cohesion, provided the dimensions and everyday use are well considered.
