Which weaving pattern suits your garden?

Compare flat, single and double weaving for appearance, light and privacy.

Continuous woven fence providing privacy in a courtyard garden

A garden fence does much more than mark your boundary. It helps define your garden’s appearance, the privacy you enjoy and how open or sheltered your outdoor space feels.

At Forest Avenue, we make our woven designer fencing using three techniques: flat, single and double weaving. Each has its own character and benefits. But which best suits your home and garden?

Here is how they compare.

Why the weaving makes a difference

The way the branches are woven determines more than your fence’s appearance. It directly affects light, visibility and privacy.

A more open weave lets in more light and creates an airy feel. A denser weave provides stronger screening and greater privacy. Each technique also has its own character, from clean and architectural to warm and natural.

There is therefore no single best weaving pattern. The right choice depends on your garden, your home and, above all, what you want to achieve in that particular spot.

Flat weaving: clean and contemporary

Flat weaving has a calm, even structure. Its horizontal lines create a clean appearance that works particularly well with contemporary architecture and minimalist gardens.

Light: the flat structure allows subtle light through, keeping the garden bright and preserving a pleasant sense of space.

Privacy: from a distance, flat weaving provides good screening. Close to the screen, limited visibility through the weave remains. This creates privacy without completely closing off the garden.

Ideal for: modern homes and gardens where clean lines, light and spaciousness are priorities.

Single weaving: natural and versatile

Single weaving is a particularly versatile choice. Subtle variation in the weave creates a warm, natural appearance that suits both modern and country-style gardens.

Light: the more open structure allows light to play through the branches. Greenery and other features behind the fence remain subtly visible, preserving the garden’s depth.

Privacy: single weaving offers an appealing balance between shelter and openness. You gain noticeably more privacy without the feeling of a completely closed wall.

Ideal for: long garden boundaries, where a very closed screen can quickly feel heavy. Even over lengths of 40 metres or more, single weaving remains visually light and natural.

It also works particularly well as a terrace divider, for neatly concealing an unattractive wall or ageing hedge, and for air conditioning and heat pump enclosures.

Double weaving: maximum privacy

Would you like to screen your garden or terrace from overlooking as effectively as possible? Double weaving is the natural choice.

Its denser construction creates a much fuller weave, greatly limiting views through the fence while retaining the natural appearance of woven branches.

Light: the denser structure lets through less light and creates a more sheltered feeling.

Privacy: of our three techniques, double weaving offers the highest level of screening. It is ideal where neighbours, passers-by or a nearby house have a direct view into your garden.

Ideal for: terraces, swimming pools, boundaries and other areas where privacy is the top priority.

How do you make the right choice?

Do not focus only on a fence’s function: consider what you find beautiful too. You will see it every day, and it can add a great deal to your home.

How much privacy do you need? If overlooking is limited and you mainly want an attractive boundary, flat or single weaving are interesting options. If your terrace is close to neighbours or visible from the street, double weaving offers considerably more privacy.

How do you want the garden to feel? To preserve light, depth and openness, lean towards flat or single weaving. To create a sheltered garden where you can fully unwind, double weaving may work better.

Where will the fence stand? Different areas need not have the same solution. A long side boundary can look lovely in single weaving, with double weaving around the terrace or pool.

The result is a garden that looks beautiful and works well.

One style for your entire outdoor space

A beautiful fence never stands entirely alone. You can therefore repeat the weaving in other garden features.

Consider a matching pedestrian, swing or sliding gate, as well as enclosures for technical equipment. Using the same materials, colours and weaving technique creates a calm, cohesive whole.

The height, colour and specification of the fence can also be tailored to your home and garden.

Natural in appearance, made to last for years

The weaving deliberately captures the warm, natural appearance of branches without the maintenance associated with traditional timber.

No annual treatment, no painting and no rotting boards. The synthetic branches are developed for long-term outdoor use and require very little maintenance.

Our woven fences are also made in Belgium and woven by hand, combining the character of traditional craftsmanship with the convenience of contemporary low-maintenance fencing.

Which weaving pattern is right for you?

For a clean, modern appearance with plenty of light, flat weaving is an attractive choice.

For a natural look and a balance between privacy and openness, single weaving is particularly versatile.

If maximum privacy and a sheltered garden are your priorities, choose double weaving.

How to compare weaving patterns in practice

View each screen straight on and at an angle. Then step back and compare again. Visibility changes with viewing distance and light on each side, so one photo cannot fully show the privacy you will get in your garden.

Note the key areas: terrace, pool, side path or boundary. Combining weaving patterns can make sense. Consider the gate and connections at the same time so colours and materials remain consistent. At our showroom, you can compare both sides of the designs.

Also distinguish weaving from construction. Flat, single and double describe panel weaving patterns; Woodscape and Ecowood refer to the frame type. On-site weaving can also have a classic or continuous construction.
