Seven steps to match height, materials, weaving and finishes to your garden.
Do not start with colours or materials straight away. Look at your garden first.
Which sides do you want to enclose? How many linear metres do you need? Are there changes in level? Is there already a fence, concrete board or retaining wall? And where might a garden gate go?
Measure each side as accurately as possible, allowing for corners, level changes and obstacles.
A few basic dimensions are usually enough for an initial price estimate. For the final installation, everything can be assessed precisely so the fence fits the existing situation.
Careful preparation makes a particularly big difference with bespoke fencing or fencing woven on site.
How much privacy do you want?
It sounds simple, but the ideal height varies considerably between gardens. A fence beside a terrace serves a different purpose from one along a driveway or at the back of the garden.
For many gardens, heights of 180 to 200 cm are worth considering when maximum privacy is desired. Lower fences can deliberately preserve certain views.
Think not only about what you want to screen, but also what you still want to see.
Would you like to keep a view of greenery from the house? Feel fully screened while sitting on the terrace? Or mainly avoid being overlooked from the street?
The right height provides privacy without making the garden feel unnecessarily closed in.
A fence stands outdoors 365 days a year. Rain, sun, frost and changing temperatures continually test its materials.
Wood is a natural material with an authentic appearance. However, it can turn grey over time and, depending on the species, may need regular treatment.
If you want as little maintenance as possible, consider synthetic weaving.

A price per linear metre only means something when the specification is comparable. Compare total height, weaving, frame, post type, any concrete gravel board, finishing profiles and number of gates. Then check whether delivery, installation, removal and disposal are included.
For an unusual size, ask how it will be made and whether the front and back differ. View the weaving patterns side by side and discuss which gate suits your garden in practice. A clear description helps you receive a much more focused estimate through the price request.
A simple sketch need not be professional. Mark each side with its length, show the corners, and indicate the gate and changes in level. Add photos of garden access so important installation requirements do not emerge too late.
