Inspiration & advice · Forest Avenue
Choose a fence that reduces overlooking and suits the character of your outdoor space.
More privacy starts by identifying where you can be seen from. Someone walking along the street looks from a different angle than a neighbour on a terrace or at an upstairs window. Sit and stand in the places where you use the garden, and note the sightlines you want to screen.
Take a few photos from your terrace towards the boundary. Include the distance, desired length and any difference in level so we can give more focused advice. Our garden fencing buying guide helps you organise this preparation.
Single weaving has an airy branch structure. Flat weaving emphasises calm horizontal lines. Double weaving is denser and is the most privacy-focused of these three panel weaving patterns.
View the screen close up and at an angle too. Viewing distance, angle and differences in light on either side affect what you can see. Compare flat, single and double weaving in person before deciding from one photo.
A fence around 180 to 200 cm high is a starting point for privacy in many gardens. It is not a guarantee for your situation: a raised terrace or window may overlook it. Sometimes a targeted screen beside the seating area works better than a taller fence around the whole boundary.
Match the height to the surroundings and check local requirements before installation. The front and back of continuous weaving differ, so discuss which side you and your neighbour will see.
A clearly defined, sheltered garden space can feel calmer because you see less movement around you. That does not mean the weaving demonstrably reduces traffic noise or other surrounding sounds. It should not be regarded as a certified acoustic barrier.
If noise is your main concern, mention it at the start of the project discussion. When choosing woven fencing, overlooking, atmosphere and ease of use remain the main considerations.
Privacy does not mean every side must be equally closed. You can screen the seating area more closely and choose a lighter weaving pattern elsewhere. Coordinate the colours to keep the transition calm.
Would you also like shade over your seating area? Read about light and shade with a woven pergola. Then compare the materials in our showroom, bringing your photos and measurements.
A photo captures the atmosphere. At our showroom and display garden, discover the textures, colours and differences between weaving patterns. View both sides and get advice for your garden.
