Inspiration & advice · Forest Avenue
Discover how material choice, craftsmanship and care contribute to a long service life.
A fence’s lifespan is not determined by its branches alone. The frame, posts, fixings and foundations must also suit the site. A tall screen on an exposed plot, for example, requires a different assessment of wind loading from a low terrace divider.
For Forest Avenue garden fencing, we match the materials and structure to the chosen design. Careful installation is just as important as material choice.
Our synthetic weaving consists of branches with a polyethylene core. In the wood-fibre finish, real wood fibres are present at the surface, giving the branches a natural texture. This outer layer may change colour slightly with environmental exposure; that is different from needing annual painting or staining.
The UV finish and wood-fibre finish therefore do not look exactly the same. Compare samples outdoors in daylight and ask which finish best matches your colour preferences.
Woodscape panels have a steel frame; Ecowood panels have a synthetic frame. Post options include aluminium and Okan hardwood. The choice affects the appearance, construction and finish of your fence.
Steel protection deserves particular attention, especially near the coast. Discuss the appropriate treatment for the location; hot-dip galvanising and a two-coat powder finish with an epoxy primer may form part of the specification. Have the chosen treatment recorded in the quotation.
Synthetic weaving does not grow and needs no staining or painting. Dirt or green deposits can still develop, depending on shade, moisture and surrounding plants. Occasional cleaning may therefore be necessary. At delivery, ask for the correct method and settings if you use a pressure washer.
Check the fixings and the operation of any gate from time to time too. Read our comparison of a hedge and fencing that needs no trimming.
We do not promise an identical lifespan in every garden: ground conditions, exposure and installation vary. A properly installed fence that suits your use does help avoid having to start again too soon. Ask about the cost of posts, foundations, finishing and installation as well as the panel itself.
Without a full environmental assessment, it is not possible to claim that one material is always the most environmentally friendly. Our buying guide helps you weigh up the practical options. Bring your measurements to the showroom for advice on your situation.
